COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program at the University of Akron requires students to complete a series of foundational and advanced courses designed to provide comprehensive expertise in accounting. All Pre-MSA Foundation Courses, totaling 12 credit hours, must be completed before entering the MSA program, covering essential topics such as business law, financial accounting, managerial finance, and business analytics and information strategy. In addition, students must complete 12 credit hours of Pre-MSA Financial Reporting Courses, which include corporate accounting and financial reporting, process analysis and cost management, and assurance services and professional responsibilities, ensuring they possess the technical knowledge necessary for advanced accounting studies. The MSA program itself requires a total of 30 credit hours, with 18 credits dedicated to required courses such as advanced financial reporting and analysis, tax research and business analytics, business analysis and valuation, internal audit and enterprise risk, data analysis and assurance services, and fraud and financial forensics. Students also complete 12 credit hours of elective courses, including two STEM electives and two additional electives from either STEM or non-STEM options, with at least six credits in accounting (ACCT) courses. This structure equips students with both technical and analytical skills, preparing them for leadership roles in accounting, finance, and business analytics, while meeting the requirements for CPA eligibility and specialized career paths.
