COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Geology with a focus on Earth Science requires students to complete a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours, including at least 10 credits at the 600 level, with restrictions of no more than two credits in research problems and six credits in thesis research. For all geology M.S. programs, excluding Engineering Geology, at least 22 credits must be in geology courses. Students must take a proficiency exam during their first semester to assess foundational knowledge in areas relevant to their thesis; those demonstrating deficiencies may be required to take additional or remedial coursework as recommended by the examining committee. Formal thesis work, including the thesis proposal and thesis research, cannot begin until the proficiency exam is completed. Although field camp may be taken for graduate credit, it does not count toward the 30-credit requirement. Core requirements include GEOL 680 Seminar in Geology (2 credits) and GEOL 699 Master’s Thesis (6 credits), totaling 8 credits. The Earth Science track requires students to have completed equivalents of the current geology courses in the University’s B.A. program in geology, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Students intending to pursue teaching must additionally complete EDCI 780 Seminar: Curricular & Instructional Studies: Earth Science, or an approved equivalent. This program equips students with the knowledge and research skills necessary for careers in geoscience, education, or environmental fields.
