COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Akron offers a comprehensive curriculum covering a broad spectrum of topics in both electrical and computer engineering, including power and renewable energy, control systems, electromagnetics, sensors and sensing systems, communications and signal processing, analog and digital electronics, embedded systems, and software engineering. The program provides both thesis and non-thesis options to accommodate students’ career goals and research interests. For the thesis option, students complete 30 credit hours, including 15 credits of Electrical and Computer Engineering courses, three credits of approved mathematics, six credits of approved electives, and six credits dedicated to the master’s thesis. Coursework must include at least 12 credits at or above the 600-level and may not exceed six credits in special topics or special problems courses, with the plan of study approved by the Advisory Committee before completing 12 credits. The non-thesis option requires 32 credit hours, comprising 15 credits of Electrical and Computer Engineering courses, six credits of approved mathematics, nine credits of approved electives, and two credits for an engineering report (ELEN 697). This option emphasizes advanced technical knowledge and professional practice rather than original research. Both options equip students with the expertise necessary for careers in industry, government, or further doctoral study, providing a solid foundation in modern electrical and computer engineering principles and applications.
