COURSE CURRICULUM

The Thesis Option for the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (MSE) at the University of Akron is structured to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in biomedical engineering while allowing for specialized research in their area of interest. The program requires completion of 30 credit hours, including core courses, electives, and a research thesis. Core courses cover fundamental topics such as circuits and signal processing, materials, mechanics, transport phenomena in biomedical engineering, physiology for biomedical science and engineering, biometry, and participation in the BME Graduate Colloquium, ensuring students acquire essential technical knowledge and professional development skills. In addition to the core, students must complete 12 to 14 credit hours of approved electives, which allow them to tailor their program to specific interests, such as medical imaging system design, advances in drug and gene delivery, transport phenomena in biology and medicine, microfluidics, advanced biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and other specialized topics offered through BMEN 5xx and 6xx courses. The thesis component, comprising six credits, requires students to conduct original research under faculty supervision, culminating in the preparation and defense of a master’s thesis, which fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical communication skills. This combination of core knowledge, electives, and research ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia, industry, or further doctoral studies.
