COURSE CURRICULUM

The Non-Thesis Option for the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (MSE) at the University of Akron is designed to provide students with advanced technical knowledge and practical skills in biomedical engineering without the requirement of a research thesis. This option requires a total of 32 credit hours, combining core courses, electives, and an engineering report. The required core courses, totaling 12 credit hours, include circuits and signal processing, materials, mechanics, transport phenomena in biomedical engineering, physiology for biomedical science and engineering, biometry, and participation in the BME Graduate Colloquium, ensuring students gain a strong foundation in essential biomedical engineering concepts. Additionally, students must complete BMEN 696, an engineering report, which allows them to demonstrate technical proficiency and analytical skills through a written project. The program also requires 12 to 14 credit hours of approved electives, allowing students to customize their studies based on individual interests, with options such as medical imaging system design, advances in drug and gene delivery systems, transport phenomena in biology and medicine, microfluidics, advanced biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and other specialized courses. Students must complete at least 18 graduate-level BMEN credits, with up to six 5xx-level courses allowed, and may take other graduate-level courses in approved disciplines. This flexible structure prepares graduates for careers in industry, government, or further academic pursuits.
