COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Music in Theory is a 34–40 credit hour program designed to provide advanced training in music analysis, historical study, research, and composition, preparing students for professional, academic, or doctoral pursuits. Students begin with 6 credits of Music Core Courses, chosen from advanced topics such as Advanced Conducting: Instrumental or Choral (MUSIC 555, 556), Music History Survey I–III (MUSIC 622–624), or Graduate Bibliography & Research (MUSIC 625), establishing a foundation in musical scholarship and analytical methods. The Major Required Courses, totaling 26–28 credits, include Musical Styles & Analysis I–III (MUSIC 616–618), Seminar in Music (MUSIC 674), Advanced Problems in Music (MUSIC 697), Masters Thesis/Project (MUSIC 699), Applied Composition (MUSAP 642), and participation in two ensembles (MUSEN 6xx), providing a blend of research, creative practice, and performance. Students may also complete 0–2 credits of additional graduate-level music courses, workshops, applied study, or advanced problems tailored with advisor approval, and 0–2 elective credits, which may include approved courses outside the music discipline. This individualized curriculum allows students to develop expertise in music theory, analysis, and composition while fostering critical thinking, research skills, and professional musicianship, equipping graduates for careers in teaching, scholarship, composition, and advanced study.
