COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Music in Music Education offers both thesis and non-thesis options, providing advanced training for students pursuing careers in teaching, administration, or scholarly research in music education. Both options require core courses that establish foundational knowledge in the field, including Foundations & Principles of Music Education (MUSIC 611), Practices & Trends in Music Education (MUSIC 612), and Measurement & Evaluation in Music (MUSIC 613). In the thesis option, students complete 4–6 credits of a Master’s Thesis or Project, complemented by 17–19 credits of additional music or education courses, selected with the guidance of music education and graduate advisors. These electives may include seminars in music education (MUSIC 675), advanced problems (MUSIC 697), workshops (MUSIC 590), applied music lessons (MUSAP 5xx/6xx), ensemble participation (MUSEN 6xx), other advanced music courses, or education courses such as Educational Foundations and Leadership (EDFN), General Administration (EDLP), and Curricular and Instructional Studies (EDCI), including a maximum of four credits in EDCI 780. The non-thesis option follows a similar structure but requires 25 credits of additional music or education coursework in lieu of the thesis, bringing the total program to 34 credits. Both options are designed to provide a flexible, individualized curriculum that develops pedagogical expertise, applied skills, and professional competence for leadership and teaching roles in music education.
