COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Music Performance Option in Accompanying is a 35–39 credit hour program designed to develop advanced collaborative performance skills in piano, organ, or harpsichord, while deepening students’ understanding of music history, theory, and literature. The curriculum begins with 8 credits of Music Core Courses selected from advanced studies in conducting, musical styles, and historical surveys, such as Advanced Conducting: Instrumental or Choral (MUSIC 555, 556), Musical Styles & Analysis (MUSIC 616–618), or Music History Survey (MUSIC 622–624). The Major Required Courses, totaling 23–26 credits, focus on professional-level accompanying and literature, including Teaching & Literature: Piano & Harpsichord (MUSIC 633), Advanced Accompanying I–IV (MUSIC 640–643), Advanced Song Literature I (MUSIC 666), and the Graduate Recital (MUSIC 698), which requires performance in at least two different media. Students also participate in two ensembles, such as Keyboard Ensemble (MUSEN 614) and Small Ensemble–Mixed (MUSEN 618), and take applied lessons (MUSAP 6xx). Additionally, students complete 2–3 credits of advanced music courses, workshops, or applied studies and 2 elective credits, which may include approved courses outside of music, such as theatre arts. This comprehensive program prepares graduates for professional collaborative performance careers and advanced study in accompanying and chamber music.
