COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Applied Politics (MAP) program at the University of Akron requires students to complete a minimum of 30 graduate credits, combining core and elective coursework with experiential learning components to prepare graduates for professional political engagement. The 24-credit core curriculum provides foundational knowledge in political strategy, electoral messaging, campaign finance, digital campaigning, civic engagement, and political behavior, complemented by a practical internship in government or politics, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world settings. Students also select a minimum of six elective credits from a wide range of courses, including political extremism, media and politics, policy analysis, human rights, voter contact, political parties, lobbying, and research methods, enabling them to tailor their studies to individual career goals and areas of interest. In addition to coursework, the program emphasizes applied learning through the MAP Capstone Project, which requires students to design and defend a comprehensive visual presentation demonstrating the skills and knowledge acquired during the program. The capstone can be completed remotely if students cannot be physically present on campus, ensuring flexibility for working professionals. Together, the combination of core instruction, elective specialization, internship experience, and the capstone project equips graduates with the practical skills, strategic insight, and professional expertise necessary for careers in political campaigns, public policy, advocacy, or government relations.
