COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program is a 60-credit graduate program designed to prepare students for licensure and professional practice in Ohio, equipping them with advanced skills to work systemically with individuals, couples, and families in a variety of mental health settings. Graduates are eligible to take the National Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Exam, and the curriculum meets Ohio’s licensure requirements. The program is organized into four key areas. Area I, Marriage and Family Therapy Foundations, includes courses in ethics, professional identity, techniques, theory, assessment, marital therapy, and systems theory, providing a strong theoretical and ethical grounding. Area II, Clinical Foundations, covers research and program evaluation, traumatology, issues in sexuality, multicultural counseling, human development, group counseling, diagnosis, advanced diagnosis, and addiction treatment planning, ensuring students gain comprehensive knowledge and applied skills. Area III allows students to choose electives such as Play Therapy or Filial Therapy to specialize according to interests. Area IV, Clinical Experience Requirements, ensures hands-on training through pre-practicum, practicum, and a master’s internship, accumulating essential supervised client contact hours. Through this integrated approach, students develop clinical competence, cultural responsiveness, and professional identity, preparing them to support clients effectively and pursue licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists.
