COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics at the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art follows a carefully structured four-year plan designed to develop both technical skill and conceptual understanding in the medium of ceramics. In the first year, students establish a foundation through courses in drawing, two- and three-dimensional design, introductory ceramics, and global art history, alongside core writing and mathematics requirements. The second year deepens both historical knowledge and studio practice with intermediate sculpture, social science courses, and continued work in ceramics and art electives. By the third year, students engage in advanced ceramics techniques such as throwing, while also completing professional practices, contemporary art history, and natural science requirements, allowing them to situate their work within broader cultural and scientific contexts. In the fourth year, students focus on mastery and individual artistic voice through advanced ceramics courses, senior exhibition, portfolio development, and elective studio work, while fulfilling remaining social science, humanities, and science requirements. Throughout the program, students integrate hands-on experimentation, historical study, and critical reflection to refine their technical proficiency and conceptual understanding. By graduation, students emerge with a comprehensive understanding of ceramics, a well-developed personal portfolio, and the skills necessary for professional practice, advanced study, or innovative artistic exploration within the contemporary art world.
