COURSE CURRICULUM

The Financial Management program at The University of Akron combines a robust general education foundation with specialized business and finance coursework to prepare students for careers in managing organizational financial resources. Students complete 36 credit hours of general education, including mathematics, statistics, logic, arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, writing, speaking, and diversity courses, with recommendations such as MATH 221 for calculus and COMM 105 or 106 for public speaking. Additional business requirements total 12 credit hours and include courses in statistics, business communications, leadership, and professional development. The College of Business Core provides 36 credit hours of essential business knowledge, covering accounting, finance, management, marketing, economics, supply chain, and strategic management, ensuring students gain both theoretical and practical understanding of business operations. The Finance-specific curriculum requires 33 credit hours, including finance core courses such as financial markets and institutions, investments, and intermediate and advanced corporate finance, along with financial reporting and analysis, portfolio management, financial statement analysis, financial strategy, and advanced financial analytics. Students also select two electives from a wide range of finance, economics, and risk management topics, allowing deeper exploration of areas such as applied econometrics, international finance, risk management, and retirement planning. This integrated program equips graduates with the analytical, technical, and strategic skills needed to manage financial assets, evaluate investments, and contribute to organizational growth in dynamic business environments.
