COURSE CURRICULUM

The Moderate/Intensive Intervention Specialist, BS program prepares students to work effectively with children and adolescents who have moderate to intensive disabilities, including learning, cognitive, emotional, and physical challenges. The recommended four-year sequence provides a structured pathway to develop foundational knowledge, pedagogical skills, and practical experience. In the first year, students build essential academic skills through courses in English composition, psychology, history, public speaking, sociology, and mathematics, establishing a strong base for understanding human development and communication. The second year introduces students to education principles, child development, urban youth mentoring, literacy foundations, and an introduction to exceptionalities, alongside diversity and science requirements. During the third year, students focus on specialized coursework in moderate/intensive educational needs, collaboration with families and professionals, instructional design, assessment, and literacy, combining theoretical knowledge with applied strategies. The fourth year emphasizes advanced programming in special education, inclusive field experiences, teaching methods in math and literacy, and culminates in extensive student teaching and clinical practicum experiences, ensuring hands-on preparation for real-world classrooms. Across all years, students engage with inclusive practices, assessment strategies, and family-professional collaboration, enabling them to support diverse learners. Graduates complete 121 credit hours and are prepared for licensure and careers in moderate/intensive intervention, equipped with the skills, experience, and professional readiness to make a meaningful impact in special education.
