COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering requires a minimum of 126 credit hours, including 36 credits in General Education, 33 in math and science, 60 in required major courses, and 9 in electives. General Education coursework includes Academic Foundations in mathematics, statistics, logic, speaking, and writing, as well as Breadth of Knowledge across arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, with opportunities to fulfill diversity and integrated/applied learning requirements. Math and science requirements provide a strong analytical foundation, including calculus through differential equations, classical physics, and general and organic chemistry. Required major courses cover polymer science fundamentals, polymer chemistry and physics, characterization techniques, engineering properties, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and laboratory experiences, culminating in a senior design or honors project. Additional courses in chemical engineering computations, material and energy balances, and transport phenomena further strengthen engineering skills. Students must also complete nine credits of electives, including at least three polymer-specific courses, with options to specialize in sustainability, processing, or biomaterials. Polymer electives focus on advanced topics, injection molding, additive manufacturing, blending and compounding, sustainable polymers, and biomaterials, while technical electives provide broader engineering, chemistry, and computational training. This comprehensive program equips students with theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory skills, and engineering expertise for careers in polymer research, development, manufacturing, and applied materials science.
