COURSE CURRICULUM

The Middle Level Education program with a Social Studies concentration equips students to teach grades 4–9 by providing a comprehensive understanding of historical, geographical, political, and economic concepts, along with strategies for effective instruction. The concentration requires 24 credit hours, blending foundational knowledge with pedagogical applications. Core coursework includes World Regional Geography or Introduction to Geography, offering students a global perspective and an understanding of spatial relationships, while U.S. History courses—covering the nation’s development to 1877 and from 1877 to the present—ensure a thorough grasp of American history. Students also study European history, selecting from Europe from Revolution to World War or Europe from World War I to the Present, and may explore ancient civilizations through Empires of the Ancient World, fostering historical reasoning and comparative analysis. Ohio History provides a localized context, helping future educators connect students with their state’s past. Government & Politics in the United States develops knowledge of political systems and civic engagement, and Teaching Personal Finance in the PK-12 Classroom equips students to teach essential life skills. Together, these courses integrate with general education and professional education requirements, emphasizing content knowledge, instructional strategies, and applied learning. Field experiences and classroom practice prepare students to deliver engaging, standards-aligned social studies instruction, developing competent, confident, and reflective middle-level educators ready for licensure and classroom success.
