COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management and Homeland Security at The University of Akron requires students to complete a comprehensive set of General Education courses totaling 36 credit hours, including academic foundations in mathematics, statistics, logic, speaking, and writing, as well as a breadth of knowledge across arts and humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, with opportunities to fulfill domestic and global diversity requirements and integrated learning experiences such as complex issues or capstone courses. The program’s core curriculum consists of 42 credit hours designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in disaster management, including courses such as Introduction to Disaster, Hazards & Risk, Principles of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Disaster Research Methods, Disaster Preparedness & Response, Introduction to Terrorism, Disaster Mitigation, Disaster Recovery, Crisis Leadership, Disaster Vulnerability, and a capstone experience, complemented by an internship and leadership-focused courses in organizational supervision, leadership principles, and project team management. In addition, students complete a Specialty Block of 15 credit hours and 25 credit hours of EMHS electives, allowing them to tailor their education to specific areas of interest within the field. Altogether, the program provides a robust 120-credit-hour pathway that equips graduates with the analytical, leadership, and operational skills required to effectively manage emergencies and disasters in public and private sector organizations.
