COURSE CURRICULUM

The University of Akron’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program provides a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in the dynamic field of computing. Students pursuing the degree must complete 36 credit hours of General Education coursework, including academic foundations in mathematics, statistics, logic, speaking, and writing, as well as breadth of knowledge courses in arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, with options for domestic and global diversity, and an integrated and applied learning component through a capstone or complex issues course. Preadmission major core requirements include foundational courses such as Computer Science I and II, Introduction to Discrete Mathematics, and Analytic Geometry-Calculus I, which collectively build the mathematical and programming skills necessary for advanced study. Mathematics and statistics courses, including Calculus II and Applied Statistics, further strengthen analytical capabilities, while natural science courses with laboratory components ensure a well-rounded scientific education. The computer science core focuses on essential technical skills with courses in Internet Systems Programming, Data Structures, Object-Oriented Programming, Operating Systems, Algorithms, Database Management, Software Engineering, and a Senior Seminar that also satisfies the capstone requirement. Students complete a minimum of nine credits of upper-level computer science electives and an additional six credits from approved computer science or related courses, including networking, GIS, linear algebra, combinatorics, numerical methods, embedded systems, and computer systems design, providing both depth and flexibility for specialization and career readiness.
