COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems (CIS) – Networking Option at the University of Akron is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in network administration, cybersecurity, and IT management. Students must complete 36 credit hours of General Education courses, including mathematics, statistics, writing, speaking, arts, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and diversity-focused courses, with some program-specific courses fulfilling these requirements. Entry into the program requires passing a Computer Literacy Placement test or completing CISS 105 Introduction to Computers and Application Software. The CIS Networking curriculum includes foundational courses such as programming logic, database management, Unix/Linux, cybersecurity fundamentals, and hardware support, alongside specialized networking courses covering routers, enterprise networking, Microsoft networking, wireless networking, advanced routing, network authentication, cloud computing, IoT, and senior networking projects. Students also complete core courses in accounting, programming for data science, digital circuits, discrete mathematics, project leadership, personal finance, and technical data analysis. Additionally, the program requires six credits of technical electives in areas such as cybersecurity programming, UNIX security, applied data mining, and advanced networking. A combined GPA of 2.0 in core and elective courses is required, and students may gain practical experience through internships or cooperative education, preparing them for careers as network administrators, IT specialists, and cybersecurity professionals.
