COURSE CURRICULUM

The University of Akron’s Civil Engineering program provides a comprehensive curriculum that integrates general education, foundational sciences, engineering principles, and specialized technical training. Students complete 36 credit hours of general education courses covering academic foundations in mathematics, writing, and communication, as well as arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, diversity, and applied learning. Program-specific general education requirements include calculus and chemistry courses that also fulfill math and natural science components. Core math and science courses, totaling 19 credit hours, encompass advanced calculus, differential equations, and physics. The engineering core includes courses in dynamics and fluid mechanics, while the non-engineering core offers options in surveying or geographic information systems. The civil engineering major itself consists of 48 credit hours, with courses such as statics, mechanics of solids, structural theory, soil mechanics, environmental engineering, hydraulics, transportation engineering, materials, steel and concrete design, construction administration, and a senior design capstone. Additionally, students complete 15 credit hours of technical electives, allowing them to tailor their studies toward specialized areas such as structural, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, or construction engineering. Elective options also extend to select upper-level courses in related engineering and science disciplines, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for diverse professional roles and advanced study.
