COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics at the University of Akron combines a comprehensive General Education curriculum with a rigorous core of mathematics courses and specialized focus areas, providing students with both breadth and depth in their studies. General Education requirements, totaling 36 credit hours, include academic foundations in mathematics, statistics, logic, speaking, and writing, as well as a breadth of knowledge in arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Students also complete diversity coursework and integrated or applied learning experiences, including complex issues or capstone courses. The Applied Mathematics core, comprising 29–30 credit hours, covers essential subjects such as Analytic Geometry and Calculus I–III, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Applied Statistics, and programming or data science, ensuring students gain a solid foundation in both theoretical and applied mathematics. Beyond the core, students choose one of three focus areas: Computational Science and Mathematical Analysis, Mathematical Data Science, or Foundations, each providing 13–15 credit hours of specialized coursework tailored to career or academic interests. To complement the core and focus area, students select 15 credit hours of electives at the 300/400 level, with at least six credits from approved fields such as Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Physics, Statistics, or Education. This structure equips graduates with versatile skills for diverse career paths and advanced studies.
