COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music in Woodwind Performance is a comprehensive professional degree program designed to develop advanced musicianship and performance skills in woodwind instruments. Students complete a total of 120–121 credit hours, including 34 hours of General Education coursework, which provides foundational skills in writing, speaking, mathematics, science, social sciences, arts, humanities, and diversity studies, as well as integrated and applied learning opportunities. The Music Core, consisting of 32 credit hours, includes courses in music theory, musicianship, keyboard skills, music history, music literature, and music software, forming the analytical and historical framework for performance. Applied Music and Performance Courses, totaling 41 hours, emphasize intensive private study on the primary woodwind instrument, participation in chamber ensembles, major ensembles such as symphony and wind ensembles, and culminate in a full senior recital. Additional required music courses (12–13 hours) cover conducting, analytical techniques, post-tonal analysis, orchestration, counterpoint, and pedagogy for woodwind instruments, ensuring students gain both technical mastery and teaching proficiency. One credit of music electives allows exploration of additional musical interests. The program balances rigorous performance training with comprehensive musical and general education, preparing graduates for professional careers in performance, teaching, or advanced graduate study while fostering versatility, musicianship, and a deep understanding of musical literature and pedagogy.
