COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance is a comprehensive professional degree designed to prepare students for careers in vocal performance, teaching, or advanced graduate study, requiring a total of 141 credit hours. Students complete 36 hours of General Education coursework, providing foundational skills in writing, speaking, mathematics, natural and social sciences, arts, humanities, and diversity studies, along with integrated and applied learning experiences. The 32-credit Music Core includes courses in music theory, musicianship, keyboard skills, music history, music literature, music orientation, and music software, establishing a strong theoretical and historical foundation. Applied Music and Performance Courses, totaling 42 hours, emphasize intensive private voice study, participation in ensembles such as Concert Choir or University Singers, and culminate in a full senior recital, with options for Opera or Lyric Theater workshops. Additional required music courses (12 hours) focus on diction for singers, song literature, vocal pedagogy, conducting, and analytical techniques, ensuring technical mastery, musical literacy, and teaching proficiency. Students also fulfill a 12-credit foreign language requirement, typically in French, German, or Italian, essential for vocal repertoire, and complete 2 hours of music electives plus 3 hours of additional major electives to broaden musical experience.
