COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music in String Performance requires a total of 120–121 credit hours and is structured to provide students with a comprehensive education in both applied string performance and music theory. Students complete General Education coursework totaling 33–36 credits, including academic foundations, arts and humanities, natural and social sciences, diversity, and integrated learning, which together develop critical thinking, communication, and cultural awareness. The music core, consisting of 32 credits, covers foundational courses such as music theory and musicianship, music history, keyboard skills, and music software, ensuring students gain strong analytical, historical, and technical knowledge. Applied Music and Performance courses, totaling 41 credits, emphasize intensive private study on the student’s primary string instrument, chamber music participation, and large ensemble involvement, culminating in a senior recital to demonstrate performance mastery. Additional required music courses (12–13 credits) include conducting, analytical techniques, post-tonal analysis, orchestration, teaching and literature for string instruments, and counterpoint or electronic music, providing essential pedagogical and compositional skills. Finally, one credit of music electives allows for exploration of individual interests beyond the core curriculum. Through this integrated program, students develop the artistic, technical, and professional skills necessary for careers as performers, educators, or for advanced graduate study, combining rigorous applied training with a strong theoretical and historical foundation.
