COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Vocal & Keyboard requires a minimum of 138 credit hours and integrates comprehensive musical training with professional education to prepare students for state teaching licensure. The program includes 36 credit hours of general education courses, covering academic foundations, breadth of knowledge, diversity, and integrated learning experiences, ensuring students gain a well-rounded liberal arts education. Core music coursework of 30 credit hours focuses on music theory, musicianship, music history, and keyboard skills, while applied music and performance courses totaling 29 credit hours provide intensive study of the primary instrument, ensemble participation, and recitals. Music education courses, totaling 40 credit hours, emphasize pedagogy, vocal and instrumental methods, conducting, technology in music education, and general and secondary school teaching methods, culminating in a full semester of student teaching accompanied by a student teaching colloquium. Additionally, nine credit hours of School of Education courses in educational psychology, literacy, and exceptionalities provide a foundation in educational theory and practice. Students must pass departmental juries and maintain a grade of C or better in music and professional education courses to progress. This integrated curriculum ensures graduates possess both the musical expertise and the pedagogical skills necessary to effectively teach vocal and keyboard music in diverse school settings while meeting state licensure requirements.
