COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Instrumental String is a professional degree designed to prepare students for initial state teaching licensure in music. The program requires 135 credit hours, combining rigorous musical training with professional education courses. Core music courses, totaling 30 credit hours, include music theory, musicianship, music history, keyboard skills, and music literature, establishing a strong theoretical foundation. Applied music and performance courses, totaling 17 credit hours, provide private instruction on the primary instrument, ensemble participation in orchestras and choirs, and performance experiences, including a senior recital. Music education courses, totaling 41 credit hours, focus on pedagogy, conducting, string methods, instrumental methods, low brass, percussion, woodwinds, technologies in music education, and general and secondary teaching methods, culminating in student teaching paired with a student teaching colloquium. Students must pass departmental juries and maintain a minimum grade of C in all music and professional education courses to progress to student teaching. College of Education courses, totaling nine credit hours, cover educational psychology, literacy in content areas, and introduction to exceptionalities, equipping students with essential teaching knowledge. General education requirements total 36 credit hours, while students must also complete 40 upper-level credits both in and outside the major. This comprehensive curriculum ensures graduates are prepared to teach string instruments effectively, integrating musicianship, pedagogy, and professional readiness in diverse educational settings.
