COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music in Composition requires a total of 120 credit hours, combining general education, core music studies, applied music, performance, and composition-focused coursework. Students complete 34 credit hours of general education and 32 hours of core music classes, including music theory, musicianship, history, literature, keyboard harmony, and music software. Applied Music and Performance Courses total 37 credit hours, featuring individual lessons in a primary instrument, chamber music, major ensembles, and intensive study in composition across four levels, culminating in a senior recital that showcases original works. The Additional Required Music Courses (13 credit hours) include Electronic Music, Conducting, Analytical Techniques, Post-Tonal Analytic Techniques, Orchestration, and Counterpoint, ensuring students develop a well-rounded understanding of both traditional and modern compositional practices. Students also complete 4 credits of music electives to tailor their learning to personal interests or career goals. Throughout the program, students refine their craft through private study, collaboration with ensembles, and exposure to diverse musical styles and analytical methods. Graduates are prepared for careers in music composition, arranging, performance, and production, or for further study at the graduate level, equipped with the creative and technical skills necessary for success in the professional music world.
