COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at The University of Akron requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, integrating general education, core courses, modern language study, and other required coursework to provide a comprehensive foundation in human communication sciences. General education encompasses 36 credit hours in academic foundations, including mathematics, statistics, logic, writing, and speaking, as well as breadth of knowledge in arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, with opportunities to fulfill diversity and applied learning requirements. Core courses, totaling 46 credit hours, cover essential subjects such as disorders of communication, clinical phonetics, hearing and speech science, language science and acquisition, articulatory and phonologic disorders, language disorders, principles of audiology, audiologic treatment, anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, organic disorders, multicultural considerations, and observation and clinical techniques, ensuring both theoretical knowledge and practical skill development. The modern language requirement of 14 credit hours, often fulfilled through American Sign Language, includes sequential language courses and a survey of Deaf culture. Additional required courses totaling 44–45 credit hours include statistics, communication, technical writing, critical thinking, human anatomy and physiology, physics or chemistry, and psychology, alongside 10 elective credits. This structured curriculum equips students with analytical, clinical, and professional competencies to pursue graduate studies or careers in speech-language pathology and audiology.
