COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy requires a total of 120 credit hours, combining general education, College of Arts & Sciences requirements, a core philosophy curriculum, and additional credits for graduation. Students complete 36 credit hours in general education, which provide a broad academic foundation, including coursework in mathematics, statistics, and logic—such as PHIL 170 Introduction to Logic—speaking, writing, arts and humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, diversity, and integrated and applied learning experiences. The College of Arts & Sciences requirements include 14 credit hours, emphasizing language proficiency through completion of the second year of a foreign language or, for American Sign Language students, courses like SLPA 222 Survey of Deaf Culture in America, as well as a minimum of 40 upper-level credits in courses both within and outside the student’s major to ensure broad intellectual development. The philosophy core consists of 30 credit hours covering foundational and advanced topics, including PHIL 101 Introduction to Philosophy, PHIL 120 Introduction to Ethics, PHIL 170 Introduction to Logic, PHIL 211 History of Ancient Philosophy, PHIL 312 History of Medieval Philosophy, PHIL 313 History of Modern Philosophy, and additional 300/400-level philosophy courses that allow students to specialize in areas of interest. The remaining 40 credit hours provide flexibility for electives, minors, or additional coursework to fulfill the 120-credit graduation requirement.
