COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Music is a broad-based liberal arts degree that integrates comprehensive study in music with general education and interdisciplinary coursework. The program requires a total of 120 credit hours, including 36 hours of general education courses designed to build foundational skills in writing, speaking, mathematics, arts and humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and diversity studies. Students also complete 14 credits to satisfy College of Arts & Sciences requirements, which include demonstrating proficiency in a second language, typically through completion of the second-year sequence or an approved alternative such as American Sign Language. The music core consists of 32 credits covering music theory, musicianship, music history, keyboard skills, and music software, ensuring a solid theoretical and historical foundation. Applied music and performance courses account for 12 credits, including applied lessons on the student’s primary instrument and participation in major ensembles, fostering practical musicianship and ensemble experience. Students also complete 3 credits of music electives, allowing for exploration of additional areas of interest within music. The program includes 22 credits of free electives, providing flexibility to pursue other academic interests. Together, this curriculum balances rigorous musical training with liberal arts education, preparing students for graduate study or careers in fields that value analytical, creative, and cultural competencies.
