COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English at The University of Akron requires students to complete a structured curriculum designed to provide both breadth and depth in the study of literature, language, and writing while preparing graduates for a variety of professional paths. Students must fulfill 36 credit hours of General Education requirements, ensuring a solid foundation in mathematics, science, humanities, social sciences, and communication skills. Within the College of Arts & Sciences, 14 credit hours are required to provide additional interdisciplinary exposure, while the English Core encompasses 18 credit hours focused on foundational literary studies, critical thinking, and composition skills. Distribution requirements total 34 credit hours, allowing students to engage with a range of subjects across the arts, humanities, and social sciences to foster cultural literacy and intellectual versatility. Students must also complete 9 credit hours of 400-level English courses, which offer advanced, specialized study and opportunities for research, seminar discussion, and critical analysis.
