COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Dance program offers a structured curriculum that integrates general education, dance technique, lecture courses, and performance experiences to provide students with a well-rounded foundation for professional careers or advanced study. Students complete 36 credit hours of recommended general education courses, including academic foundations in mathematics, statistics, logic, speaking, and writing, along with breadth of knowledge courses in arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, complemented by diversity and integrated learning experiences. College of Arts & Sciences requirements include a minimum of 40 upper-level credits, either within or outside the major, to ensure breadth and depth of academic experience. The dance-specific curriculum emphasizes technical training, beginning with Ballet III-V for 14 credits and Modern III-V for nine credits, alongside Jazz and Tap instruction totaling eight credits. Additional courses in somatics, world dance, ballroom, and partnering contribute seven credits to enhance body awareness, cultural knowledge, and partner skills. Dance lecture courses, totaling 27 credits, cover choreography, physical analysis, history, pedagogy, digital technology, and performance fundamentals to develop both intellectual and practical expertise. Finally, students engage in a minimum of five credits through dance organizations such as Touring Ensemble or Dance Production Ensemble, fostering performance experience, collaboration, and professional readiness in the field of dance.
