COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Media Studies combines a strong liberal arts foundation with specialized media training to prepare students for careers in broadcasting, journalism, digital media, and content creation. Students complete 36 credit hours of general education coursework, covering writing, speaking, mathematics, social and natural sciences, and humanities, along with diversity and applied learning components. Within the College of Arts and Sciences, students also fulfill a two-year foreign language requirement or complete a certificate program outside the Communication department, along with at least 40 upper-level credit hours. The Communication Core provides a foundation in communication theory, research, and analysis through courses such as Introduction to Communication, Communication Research or Data Collection, and a theory course like Media Theory or Public Relations Theory. The Media Studies Core develops practical media skills through classes such as Multiplatform Production, Introduction to the Media Industries, Newswriting Across the Media, Legal Issues in Media, and a production-based course like Video Editing, Podcasting, or Studio Production. Students also select 12 credit hours of Media Studies electives in areas such as social media, digital content creation, film, media management, or communication internships, plus three additional communication elective credits, creating a comprehensive preparation for media and communication professions.
