COURSE CURRICULUM

The Emergency Medical Services Technology program at The University of Akron requires a comprehensive set of courses designed to equip students with both foundational knowledge and advanced paramedic skills. Students begin with core courses including PSYC 100 Introduction to Psychology, ANAT 206 Applied Human Anatomy & Physiology I, COMM 263 Professional Communications and Presentations, BAHA 120 Medical Terminology, ENGL 111 English Composition I, and STAT 250 Statistics for Everyday Life, alongside two field experience courses, FIRE 295 and FIRE 296, totaling 19 credit hours. Students then select either Option 1, focusing on fire protection and investigation with courses such as FIRE 100 Introduction to Fire Protection, FIRE 102 Fire Safety in Building Design & Construction, and FIRE 104 Fire Investigation Methods, or Option 2, which emphasizes hands-on firefighting skills including FIRE 260 Fundamentals of Firefighting, FIRE 261 Firefighter I, FIRE 262 Firefighter II, and FIRE 263 Emergency Vehicle Operations, adding 11-12 credit hours. The program’s paramedic sequence consists of ten sequential courses, EMSP 201 through EMSP 211, covering Fundamentals of EMT-Paramedic I through X, providing 30 credit hours of advanced pre-hospital care training. Together, these courses, totaling 64-65 credit hours, integrate theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and field experience, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for Ohio EMT-paramedic certification and competent to provide emergency medical care in diverse, high-pressure environments.
