ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Akron, located in Akron, Ohio, is a public research university that is part of the University System of Ohio and classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity.” Known for its focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), it is particularly recognized for its expertise in polymers, advanced materials, and engineering. The university offers around 200 undergraduate and over 100 graduate programs, enrolling approximately 15,000 students. Its School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, housed in a 12-story glass building near downtown Akron, is a global leader in polymer research. The university also manages branch campuses in Orrville, Medina County, and Lakewood, and partners with Lorain County Community College for nursing programs. Founded in 1870 as Buchtel College through the philanthropy of John R. Buchtel, it evolved from a Universalist college to a non-denominational municipal university in 1913, and became a state university in 1967. The institution expanded rapidly in the 20th century, adding numerous facilities and achieving enrollment peaks of over 25,000 students. Under President Luis Proenza (1999–2014), the university underwent a $627 million campus transformation that included the construction of InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. However, in the following years, Akron faced financial difficulties, leading to job cuts and enrollment declines of nearly 40 percent between 2011 and 2020. President Gary Miller, appointed in 2019, introduced structural changes to streamline operations amid budget challenges intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these struggles, the university remains a vital center for research and innovation, maintaining a historic relationship with Akron’s rubber and tire industry, and pioneering advancements through its world-renowned polymer science programs.
