ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The Catholic University of America is a private Catholic research university located in Washington, D.C., founded in 1887 with approval from Pope Leo XIII. It is one of the few pontifical universities in the United States and the only one not primarily focused on seminary training. Originally established as a graduate and research center, the university began offering undergraduate programs in 1904 and is now classified as an R1 institution, indicating very high research activity. Its campus is situated in the Brookland neighborhood, often called “Little Rome” due to the presence of numerous Catholic institutions nearby.The university emphasizes liberal arts education, professional training, and personal development while maintaining strong connections with the Catholic Church and related organizations. Its history reflects both academic growth and social challenges. In its early years, it admitted Black students, although this policy was later reversed during segregation before being reinstated after protests in the 1930s. The institution also expanded significantly after World War II due to increased enrollment from veterans using the G.I. Bill.Throughout its development, the university has maintained its mission of integrating Catholic teachings with higher education and research. It has contributed to leadership development and intellectual advancement within the Catholic community in the United States.
