COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Wildlife Ecology at Texas State University is a 30–31 credit-hour thesis-based graduate program that emphasizes the application of ecological principles to wildlife conservation and natural resource management. The curriculum is designed to develop strong quantitative, analytical, and research skills needed for advanced work in ecology, conservation biology, and related environmental sciences. A key component of the program is its strong collaboration with agencies such as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which provides students with exposure to real-world wildlife research and potential career pathways in conservation and environmental management.The program begins with two required core courses: Statistics and Experimental Design I and II, which together build a strong foundation in data analysis, research design, and scientific interpretation. These courses prepare students to conduct rigorous ecological research and evaluate complex biological data. In addition to the core, students complete a seminar requirement, selecting from options such as Seminar in Biology or Seminar in Aquatic Resources, or combining seminars with Fundamentals of Research. These seminars provide opportunities to engage with current scientific research, develop professional communication skills, and explore specialized topics in wildlife and ecological studies.Students must also complete a minimum of 13 credit hours of advisor-approved electives, allowing for specialization in areas aligned with their research interests in wildlife ecology and natural resource management. The program culminates in a thesis requiring at least 3 credit hours of original research under faculty supervision, where students contribute new scientific knowledge in their field. A comprehensive examination is also required. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in wildlife research, conservation agencies, environmental consulting, and further doctoral study in ecology and related disciplines.
