COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education with a concentration in Autism/Applied Behavior Analysis is a 36-credit-hour graduate program designed to provide advanced training in behavior analysis, intervention strategies, and clinical practice for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and related developmental needs. The program begins with a structured set of required courses that establish a strong foundation in applied behavior analysis and special education theory and practice. These include Basic Principles of Behavior, Ethics in Behavior Analysis, Theory and Philosophy in Behavior Analysis, Research Methods in Behavior Analysis, Assessment and Intervention of Challenging Behavior, Organizational Behavior Management and Supervision, Behavior Assessment and Intervention for Skill Acquisition, and a Clinical Practicum in Autism Spectrum Disorders, which together emphasize both theoretical understanding and applied clinical experience in real-world settings.In addition to the core coursework, students complete a 12-credit-hour cognate in special education, selecting from courses that expand their expertise in areas such as emotional and behavioral disorders, early childhood intervention, autism education, learning disabilities, instructional practices, special education law, and positive behavior interventions and supports. These electives allow students to tailor their academic experience to their specific professional interests while deepening their understanding of diverse educational challenges. The program also permits advisor-approved electives for further specialization. A key feature of the degree is the comprehensive examination requirement, which ensures that students demonstrate mastery of both theoretical knowledge and applied skills in behavior analysis and special education.
