COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) Teacher Fellows program at Texas State University is a 30-credit-hour graduate pathway designed to support early-career educators as they develop advanced instructional, classroom management, and research-based teaching skills while working full-time in the classroom. The curriculum integrates graduate coursework with practical classroom experience, enabling teachers to apply educational theory directly to real-world teaching situations. Required courses provide a strong foundation in elementary education, including Problems of Practice in Elementary Education, Teaching Strategies for Elementary Teachers: Alternative Models, Curriculum and Management in the Elementary and Middle School, Principles and Practices in the Elementary School, and Classroom Management, Discipline, and Legal Issues. The program also emphasizes reflective practice and inquiry-based learning through Action Research for Practitioners and a Research Seminar in Education, which help teachers systematically study and improve their own instructional practices. In addition to core coursework, students complete nine credit hours of electives that allow for specialization in areas such as mathematics instruction, language arts, social studies, science education, multicultural teaching, ESL methods, early childhood curriculum, educational technology, instructional development, reading and literacy education, and special education. These electives provide flexibility for teachers to tailor the program to their specific classroom needs and career goals. The program concludes with a comprehensive examination to assess candidates’ understanding of key educational concepts and their ability to apply them effectively. Overall, the Teacher Fellows program is designed to strengthen teaching effectiveness, deepen pedagogical knowledge, and promote reflective, research-informed practice, preparing educators to become skilled, adaptable, and impactful professionals in elementary education settings.
