COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) at Texas State University offers two distinct pathways designed for individuals pursuing leadership roles in education across different settings: the Principal Certification Concentration in Educational Leadership and the Major in Student Affairs in Higher Education. The Educational Leadership track with Principal Certification is intended for experienced K–12 educators who aspire to become school administrators. This program focuses on preparing candidates for formal leadership positions such as principals by emphasizing instructional leadership, school improvement, organizational management, curriculum development, school law, and action research. A key component of the program is a year-long, field-based internship that provides hands-on administrative experience under the guidance of practicing school leaders. Through this combination of coursework and practical training, students develop the skills needed to lead schools effectively, support teacher development, improve student achievement, and engage with families and communities in meaningful ways. The program is aligned with certification requirements, ensuring graduates are eligible for principal licensure upon completion.The Student Affairs in Higher Education program is designed for individuals interested in leadership roles within colleges and universities. This pathway focuses on student development theory, higher education administration, and the design and implementation of programs that support student success beyond the classroom. Students gain knowledge and skills related to areas such as student engagement, residence life, academic advising, admissions, multicultural affairs, and career services. The curriculum prepares graduates to work in a variety of campus environments, helping students navigate academic and personal development while contributing to inclusive and supportive institutional communities. Together, these two M.Ed. programs provide comprehensive preparation for leadership roles in both K–12 and higher education settings, emphasizing professional growth, equity, and effective educational practice across diverse learning environments.
