COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.A. in Geography program requires a total of 33 credit hours and is structured to provide a strong foundation in research, analysis, and applied geography. The core courses include Applied Research Design and Techniques, Multivariate Quantitative Methods or Qualitative Research Methods, Geographical Analysis, and Directed Research, which together build essential research and analytical skills. Students then complete a concentration in Environmental Studies, including courses such as Environmental Studies and Geographic Elements of Environmental Law, along with 9 additional credit hours chosen from a wide range of subjects like urbanization, global issues, hazards, water resources, transportation systems, GIS, and remote sensing. This allows students to tailor their studies based on their interests in environmental and applied geography.In addition to the concentration, students must complete 6 credit hours of prescribed electives selected from an extensive list that covers areas such as environmental management, geographic education, spatial analysis, planning, tourism, and advanced GIS techniques. There is also an option to take up to 3 credit hours of advisor-approved electives from outside the department, adding further flexibility. The program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, including opportunities for internships, independent study, and field methods. Overall, the curriculum is designed to develop critical thinking, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills, preparing students for careers in environmental planning, GIS analysis, urban development, and related fields.
