COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.A. in Geography program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to address real-world problems related to geography. The program requires the completion of 33 credit hours, which include core courses, skill-based subjects, and electives in one of four specialization areas: general geography, resource and environmental studies, geographic information science, or geographic education, with the education track offered fully online. Students develop analytical, technical, and problem-solving abilities that can be applied in various professional fields. The program follows a non-thesis structure and does not include a minor, but it requires students to complete a research paper as part of the degree. It is offered at the San Marcos campus and provides a comprehensive learning experience focused on practical application and research-based understanding.The Master of Applied Geography (M.A.Geo.) program offers a variety of majors that allow students to specialize in different areas of geography based on their interests and career goals. Students can choose from Geographic Information Science, Geography, Geography with a Geographic Education option, or Natural Resources and Environmental Studies. Each major focuses on developing practical skills and applied knowledge to address real-world geographical and environmental challenges. The Geographic Information Science track emphasizes mapping, spatial analysis, and data interpretation using modern technologies, while the general Geography major provides a broad understanding of physical and human geography. The Geographic Education option is designed for those interested in teaching and educational roles, and the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies major focuses on sustainability, environmental management, and resource conservation. Overall, the program prepares students for careers in fields such as environmental planning, GIS analysis, education, and policy-making by combining analytical skills, technical expertise, and applied research experience.
