COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in History program offers flexible pathways to suit different academic and career goals, allowing students to choose between thesis and non-thesis options. The thesis track focuses on producing an original research work based on primary sources, making it suitable for those interested in research or further academic study. The non-thesis option, on the other hand, requires students to demonstrate their knowledge through comprehensive exams in their major fields. Students can also choose a concentration in history education under the non-thesis route, combining history coursework with education studies to obtain teacher certification, while current teachers have the option to integrate additional fields of study.The program also offers a concentration in public history, available in both thesis and non-thesis formats. The non-thesis public history option requires 36 credit hours and includes specialized courses such as historic preservation, museum studies, and oral history, along with core components like historiography and research seminars. The thesis option requires 39 credit hours, including additional thesis work. Overall, the degree ranges from 33 to 39 credit hours depending on the chosen path and is offered at San Marcos without a minor, except for the history education track which includes one. The program is further enriched through collaborations with various research centers, providing strong academic and practical learning opportunities.
