COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Leadership with a Principal Certification Concentration is a graduate program designed to prepare experienced educators for formal leadership and administrative roles in K–12 schools and districts. The program emphasizes leadership development grounded in instructional improvement, school transformation, and equity-focused practices, with the goal of equipping future principals to effectively lead diverse learning communities. Students engage in a structured sequence of coursework covering key areas such as instructional leadership, school improvement, curriculum design, school law, organizational management, and action research. A defining feature of the program is its strong applied learning component, including a year-long, field-based internship that allows candidates to gain real-world leadership experience under the mentorship of practicing administrators. Through this combination of theory and practice, students develop the skills necessary to support teachers, improve student outcomes, and engage families and communities in the educational process. The program is aligned with state certification requirements for principal licensure, ensuring graduates are eligible for leadership positions in public schools upon completion. In addition to the principal certification pathway, Texas State also offers a Master of Education in Student Affairs in Higher Education, which prepares students for professional roles in colleges and universities. This program focuses on student development theory, higher education administration, leadership in student services, and the design of programs that support student success outside the classroom. Students learn how to work in areas such as residence life, admissions, student engagement, academic advising, and multicultural affairs. Together, these M.Ed. programs provide distinct but complementary pathways for individuals interested in leadership roles, whether in K–12 educational systems or in higher education institutions, with a shared emphasis on professional growth, equity, and effective organizational leadership.
