COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animal Science program at Texas State University requires a minimum of 120 semester credit hours and is structured to provide a strong foundation in science, agriculture, and animal management. Students begin in the freshman year with introductory agriculture courses, biology, mathematics, and communication, building essential knowledge and skills for advanced study. In the sophomore year, the curriculum expands to include chemistry, history, government, and additional agriculture courses, with a key requirement that students must complete specific math and chemistry courses before enrolling in upper-level agriculture classes. The junior year focuses on more specialized coursework such as animal science, biology, and applied agriculture topics, along with electives that allow students to explore specific interests within the field. By the senior year, students complete advanced agriculture courses and electives at the 3000–4000 level, gaining deeper expertise in areas like animal production, nutrition, and management. Throughout the program, students must complete at least 36 advanced credit hours and nine writing-intensive hours, ensuring both academic depth and strong communication skills. The curriculum also includes general education requirements such as history, philosophy, creative arts, and social sciences, providing a well-rounded education. Additionally, language requirements may apply depending on prior high school coursework.
