COURSE CURRICULUM

The Agricultural Education program at Texas State University requires a minimum of 120 semester credit hours and combines agricultural science, teaching preparation, and general education to prepare students for careers in education and the agricultural industry. The program begins with foundational coursework in mathematics, biology, communication, and introductory agriculture during the freshman year, ensuring students build essential academic and technical skills early on. In the sophomore year, students expand their knowledge with agriculture-focused courses, chemistry, history, and social sciences, while also starting to explore more advanced agricultural topics. A key requirement is that students must complete specific math and chemistry courses before enrolling in upper-level agriculture classes, ensuring they are academically prepared for advanced study. During the junior year, the curriculum becomes more specialized, with advanced agriculture courses, education-related subjects, and skill development in teaching methods, preparing students for classroom instruction and leadership roles. The senior year focuses heavily on professional preparation, including education courses, reading instruction, and a capstone teaching internship that provides real classroom experience. Students must complete at least 36 advanced credit hours and nine writing-intensive hours, as well as a required minor in education, which is integrated into the degree plan. To qualify for teacher certification, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 and earn at least a “C” in all major and certification-related courses. The program also follows state requirements, including background checks through the Texas Education Agency. Overall, the curriculum blends agricultural expertise with teaching skills, preparing graduates to become certified educators and professionals in agriculture.
