COURSE CURRICULUM

At Texas State University, the Course Substitution Request process for the Health and Fitness Management degree allows students to have previously completed or planned courses evaluated to determine if they can replace required courses in their degree plan. This process is especially helpful for transfer students or those who have taken similar coursework at another institution, as it can prevent the need to repeat classes and help save both time and money. Students must begin by submitting a Transfer Evaluation Request, where the course content is reviewed for equivalency with Texas State requirements. Common courses eligible for substitution include core curriculum subjects such as English composition, mathematics, life and physical sciences, philosophy, creative arts, history, government, social and behavioral sciences, communication, and literature. However, approval is not automatic and depends on how closely the course matches the required learning outcomes. In some cases, additional approval is required from specific departments, such as the College of Science for certain math courses, the Health and Human Performance department for science courses, or the Psychology department for psychology-related classes. Once a course is approved, students must submit official documentation to the College of Education Advising Center so the substitution can be recorded in their Degree Audit. Without this final step, the substitution will not be reflected in their academic progress. Overall, the process ensures academic standards are maintained while offering flexibility, helping students stay on track for graduation and make efficient use of their previous academic experience.
