COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography degree plan at Texas State University is a 120-credit-hour program structured over four years, combining general education, specialized geography courses, and a required minor. In the freshman year, students complete core subjects such as communication, mathematics, science, government, history, and an introductory geography course (either cultural or world geography), along with physical geography and its lab. This stage builds a strong academic foundation while introducing basic geographic concepts.In the sophomore year, students continue with core curriculum requirements and begin focusing more on geography through courses like Geographic Information Systems and Research Methods. They may also take computer science, information systems, or mathematics courses to support technical skills, along with starting or continuing a minor field of study. The junior year emphasizes advanced geography topics, including courses in mapping, remote sensing, and advanced GIS, which develop skills in spatial analysis, data interpretation, and geospatial technologies. Students also continue completing their minor requirements during this stage.In the senior year, students take upper-level geography courses from a selection of specialized topics such as geoprogramming, web mapping, GPS and GIS applications, machine learning, or internships and fieldwork. They also complete a writing-focused English course, finish their minor, and take any remaining electives. Throughout the program, students must complete at least 36 credit hours in geography and maintain the required GPA standards. Overall, the curriculum is designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in geographic analysis, preparing students for careers in fields like urban planning, environmental management, GIS, and data analysis.
