COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science program in Mathematics and Computer Science is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematical theory, computational methods, and applied problem-solving skills, leading to a total of 120 credit hours for graduation. The curriculum begins with general education core requirements, including communication, government, social and behavioral sciences, humanities, life and physical sciences, and mathematics, along with US 1100 for students entering with fewer than 16 college credits. Students build a solid mathematical base through courses such as MATH 2471 (Calculus I), MATH 2472 (Calculus II), MATH 2358, and additional foundational mathematics courses like MATH 2328 and MATH 2393. Early computer science training begins with CS 1428 and CS 2308, introducing programming and computational thinking. As students progress into the sophomore and junior years, they take advanced mathematics and computer science courses such as MATH 3305, MATH 3324, CS 3354, and CS 3358, while also completing required courses in science, government, and electives to maintain a well-rounded academic profile. The program places strong emphasis on advanced study through 12 hours of upper-level MATH/CS electives, with at least 6 hours in mathematics, allowing students to specialize in areas such as differential equations, combinatorics, artificial intelligence, data mining, computer vision, and software engineering. In the senior year, students complete higher-level coursework including MATH 3380, MATH 3383, MATH 4383, CS 4347, and a capstone-style course CS 4379G, along with general electives to fulfill remaining degree requirements. The program encourages students to select electives aligned with applied fields such as operations research, systems engineering, optimization, and data analysis. Overall, this degree prepares students for careers in technology, analytics, research, or graduate study by combining rigorous mathematical training with practical computing and problem-solving experience.
