COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Aquatic Biology is a science-focused degree designed to study aquatic organisms and their interactions with diverse aquatic environments. It explores ecosystems such as streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, wetlands, springs, cave systems, reservoirs, and coastal or riverine habitats. The program emphasizes both biological understanding and environmental relationships, preparing students to work with aquatic life and natural resource systems.A major strength of the program is its strong foundation in the natural sciences. Students complete core coursework in biology, chemistry, and physics, along with laboratory training that develops hands-on scientific skills. The biology sequence includes functional and organismal biology with labs, while chemistry progresses from general chemistry to organic chemistry with laboratory experience. Physics is also included to build quantitative and analytical understanding of natural systems. Mathematics is required to support data analysis and scientific problem-solving.The curriculum combines general education requirements with specialized biology courses and electives. Students study ecology, physiology, and aquatic systems, along with advanced upper-level biology courses. There is also flexibility through electives and a minor, with chemistry or biochemistry strongly recommended to strengthen scientific preparation.Students are required to complete at least 120 semester credit hours, including a minimum of 36 advanced (3000–4000 level) hours. Writing-intensive coursework is also required to develop scientific communication skills. Depending on prior education, students may need to complete additional requirements such as US 1100 or foreign language courses.The program also allows transfer credit from biology, chemistry, and physics coursework under the Biology Field of Study. This helps students enter the program with prior academic preparation.Overall, Aquatic Biology prepares students for careers in environmental science, fisheries, conservation, wildlife biology, research, and natural resource management.
