COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biology at Texas State University is a 120–122 credit hour program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of living organisms, from cellular processes to whole ecosystems, along with the environments in which they exist. The curriculum begins in the freshman year with foundational coursework in functional and organismal biology, general chemistry with laboratory components, mathematics, communication, government, and history. These early courses establish essential scientific knowledge, laboratory skills, and academic communication abilities. In the sophomore year, students progress into more advanced biology and chemistry sequences, including genetics, ecology-related biology courses, and organic chemistry with labs, along with physics and continued general education requirements. This stage strengthens analytical thinking and deepens understanding of biological and chemical systems.In the junior year, students engage in upper-level biology courses such as physiology and specialized biological electives, along with physics and philosophy or language-based coursework. This year emphasizes advanced scientific concepts, experimental methods, and integration of biological systems across molecular, organismal, and environmental levels. Students also begin selecting electives aligned with their academic and career interests, preparing them for specialization.The senior year focuses heavily on advanced biology electives and independent academic development. Students complete higher-level biology courses, a required capstone-style biology course, and additional electives and minor coursework. This stage allows students to tailor their studies toward specific fields such as ecology, microbiology, genetics, or human biology, while strengthening research and critical thinking skills.Across all four years, the program integrates rigorous laboratory training, field experience opportunities, and interdisciplinary learning. Students develop strong skills in scientific reasoning, data analysis, and experimental design. The degree prepares graduates for a wide range of career paths, including medical, dental, veterinary, and other professional schools, as well as graduate study or direct employment in laboratory research, healthcare, environmental science, biotechnology, and field-based biological work.
